About This Painting
Bessie Pitjara currently resides in Utopia, Central Australia, and is the daughter of one of Australia's most renowned artists, Polly Ngala. Born in 1960 to the Alyawarr tribe (about 200kms north-east of Alice Springs), Bessie paints the Bush Plum Dreaming, passed on from her mother and aunties Kathleen Ngala and Angeline Pwerle Ngala. Bush Plums feature prominently in Aboriginal womens paintings, as it has always been an important source of food. The plant produces white star-shaped flowers, followed by green berries that turn black or dark purple when ripe. The plant is strong and resillient, and is a common food source for emus, bush turkeys and other birds.
