Anita Kim
Abstract Painter / Mixed Media (Strathfield, NSW)

Anita Kim is a young contemporary artist specialising in custom design abstract art. She is driven by the philosophy that “creative people exhibit a constant discontent with uniformity” (unknown). She has found expression through art as a channel to release her creative energy, by predominantly using acrylic painting on canvas, ink and to a lesser extent producing artworks in mixed-media.

Anita was born in South Korea and arrived in Sydney in 1982. She graduated with a Bachelor of Secondary Education degree at the University of Sydney, having majored in English and completed studies in Fine Arts in 1998. She then pursued further studies in Fine Arts at the Sydney Gallery of Art school in 2002, majoring in painting and drawing to further fine tune her artistic skills set.

Anita’s artworks exhibit the use of symbolic motifs and colours which have been a common thread in her recent paintings. Her works are distinctively characterised by a cleverly contrived method of implementing a simple narrative style, a style that reflects her teaching experiences in English. Symbolic motifs permeate through most of her artworks to connote a deeper message in her paintings.

She states that “amongst other things, I have been recently intrigued by the theory in which colour psychology impacts people’s emotions and thoughts, particularly when looking at a painting. There are believed to be 11 basic universal colours that have fundamental psychological properties. Each are said to have potentially positive or negative effects depending on colour combination. Composition and colour co-ordination may take greater precedence in abstract art than the subject matter itself. This is because representing concrete images and distorting them into fragments or anything where the subconscious takes you relies heavily on appreciating the relationship between certain colours. It is all about adopting a creative perspective. We take the following colours for granted but the following colours insinuate the following; blue-intellectual, red-physical, yellow-emotional, green-balance just to list a few”.

The essence of her paintings employ an unique experimentation and creation of how paint, and texture-creating matter such as impasto has on the drying and layering effects on the canvas and how ink runs to mingle with wet paint. While symbolic motifs were apparent in her earlier works to document her life stories, her paintings now focuses more on splashing, flicking, throwing and squeezing life-inducing colours on the canvas which are notably contemporary and abstract. This change was embraced in order to meet the needs of her corporate clients. Anita’s artworks depict a definite affinity with vibrant, effervescent colours that depict her sanguine and spontaneous temperament.

Some of her works transpire a subtle connection with Pollock, Kandinsky, and Picasso as epitomised in both her paintings and in her mixed-media artworks. Anita utilises materials such as sequence, gold paper, buttons, threads, wool and recycled paper in her mixed-media artworks which is finally framed in glass. One of which was donated, auctioned off and sold at an annual ball in Sydney to support a charity organization. Anita wants to continue to support charity initiatives through her community and church.

Anita is currently in the process of organising a solo exhibition and group shows in Sydney in 2006. She will also be travelling to Europe and Asia this year to gain further artistic inspiration in the realm of abstract art. She has started her own business working as a custom-design abstract painter and has gained valuable experience working as a volunteer in the venue design/promotions department at Hillsong Burwood over the last few years. She now collaborates with interior designers to create custom-design paintings that would complement the colour scheme of a decor. Currently, Anita creates commissioned-based paintings with a business called Image Plus (Fuji), where some of her artworks are displayed for private sales. She will undertake more commissioned based work with other businesses.

Anita will be delighted to discuss the needs of potential customers. For more information on Anita’s original artworks, visit her website below. She is available also for commission work and is keen in connecting with galleries and other exhibition opportunities. She seeks to build connections with other entrepreneurially minded artists or interior designers through artsConnect.
