About The Artist : Layne
Beachley
As a grommet, Layne ate up competitive sports.
At 16 she skipped the amateur contest structure and joined the
Pro Tour. By 20, she was sixth in the world and beginning the
intense physical training regime that's put her above the pro
surfer pack throughout a long career.
Pushing so hard had its downside - literally.
Layne was hit by two debilitating bouts of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
in 1993 and 1996. All but wiped out by this mental, physical
and emotional challenge, Layne beat depression to stay focused
on her ultimate goal - to be World Champion.
But caning herself in training paid off. Layne's
strength gave her the perfect foundation for big wave surfing,
allowing her to push the limits both at the legendary Sunset
Beach and in the realm of tow-in surfing.
Then, in 1988 she nailed the first of six consecutive
World Surfing Titles, going on to rewrite history with the greatest
number of consecutive World Championship victories, male or
female.
Layne's competitive streak charges just as hard
on land as in the water. In addition to her surfing and business
commitments, in 2003 Layne created the Aim for the Stars Foundation
to support and promote the academic, sporting, community and
cultural dreams of young women.
