Suvira
McDonald
Ceramic
Artist (Byron
Bay, NSW)
Suvira
McDonald is an award-winning ceramic artist in whose hands clay takes
myriad forms, from garden sculptures to ceramic vases, mugs and other
dinnerware. His career as an artist spans 30 years and, as a visual
artist, he commenced working in ceramics 12 years ago. In that time
he has completed his Masters Degree and exhibited significant works
in the area of architectural ceramics, funerary art, corporate art,
contemporary vessels. He works in the stoneware tradition and is a sometime
wood fire artist. In the sculptural arena Suvira's work is often in
mixed media using combinations of ceramics, wood, glass, metals, concrete
often using recycled materials.
Originally
trained as a potter, his work is influenced by Japanese and Chinese
ceramic traditions. His passion for the sumptuous Sung dynasty glazes
is quite evident in his functional ceramic designs including unusual
tableware and funerary wares as well as in his ceramic sculpture. This
early training as a studio potter has provided a firm grounding in ceramic
technology and his work with wood fire kilns has been published.
Suvira
draws upon the landscape for inspiration. By abstracting from its infinite
manifestations, he produces form, texture, space, light. His
recent works, Caldera, include a new collection of garden sculptures,
ceramic landscapes and loosely thrown vessels which are inspired by
the eroded terrain surrounding Mount Warning on the NSW far north coast.
Suvira
has been awarded the Craftmark by Craft Australia, the national organisation
for contemporary craft. Craftmark accreditation is awarded to professional
craft practitioners who have a high level of experience and specialised
technical skills.
