Collage / Mixed Media
(Newtown,
NSW)
Cindy
Tonkin had been creating collage and mixed media pieces for only 2 years
when she held first solo exhibition in February 2004 at the Joy Ewart
Gallery in Willoughby (Sydney).
After
enrolling in a summer school and discovering her chosen class was not
available, Cindy found herself "accidentally" in a mixed media
class with Adrienne Crouch, a prominent Sydney art teacher. In the 10
day summer school she discovered a latent talent for collage - sticking
pieces of paper to others pieces of paper and creating beauty. Since
then she has taken weekly classes, and has become almost obsessed with
making beauty from paper.
Ive
never done art classes before, I did a little patchwork quilting, but
I never finished them - the interesting part was always the front!.
Finding that collage is a lot like patchwork was her inspiration for
the title of her first exhibition - Patchwork and Stories.
Cindy
also
has creative interests in photography, improvised theatre and singing.
She is particularly interested in connecting with other mixed media
artists.
