Barbara Flaum
Glass Artist (Burnside SA)
Barbara Flaum is an Adelaide based artist specialising in the creation of individually designed decorative mosaics. After several years of formal art training at Adelaide Central School of Art, Barbara exhibited widely in a number of mediums including pastels, oil painting and printmaking.
Whilst living on a rural property in the Adelaide Hills where she was involved in the Landcare movement and conservation, Barbara’s art became focused on Australian landscape and flora. At this time, she also began experimenting with broken tiles and soon became ‘hooked’ on the creative possibilities of mosaics.
Now living in Adelaide, Barbara’s interest in Australian native flora and fauna informs her work. Her detailed artistic designs appear both in her mosaics and her intricate appliqué needlework.
Barbara works with a variety of materials including ceramic tiles and old and broken china and pottery. In recent years her preferred medium has been Italian glass tiles and imported stained glass . Some special effects are created by fusing tiny pieces of coloured glass in a kiln. She says the variety of textures and colours available in glass are like working with a painter’s palate.
Barbara's mosaics are mostly functional pieces which can be used to decorate and enhance your home and garden and are portable enough to move.
Most of Barbara’s mosaic works have been commissioned by private collectors. For information on availability of work and how to commission her art, please contact Barbara directly below.
