David Oberdorf
Fine Ink lllustrator
(Hornsby Heights, NSW)
I worked as a press photographer for 22 years from 1972- 1994 and trained as a cadet for two years, before being promoted to Chief Photographer in 1974. I enjoyed the freedom of expression and variety in the work. The Maitland Mercury newspaper is a regional daily, and I was responsible for covering news, pic / stories (editorial), sport, fashion, social and advertising features. When the work became more stressful, and less satisfying, I left the newspaper in 1994 to pursue my passion for art fulltime.
I began drawing house portraits, and have exhibited my work several times : 1994 Maitland City Art Gallery, 1995 Maitland City Council Admin Building, 1997 and 2003 Pender Place Shopping Centre Maitland.
Since this time demand has grown significantly for my house portraits, which I draw by hand in fine ink from photographs. Many requests are made by proud home owners or people wishing to give their favourite relative or friend a lasting and unique portrait of their home. Orders are also often taken for church portraits, to become a timeless gift and celebration of the wedding for the bride and groom.
I have also completed numerous commissions for Maitland, Newcastle and Blacktown City Councils which include public buildings, hotels and tourist sites. In 2009, I won the "I Heart Kirriblli Art Exhibition and Prize" for drawing/ sketching.
Artists Statement:
"I see my work as a marriage of art and photography. I draw the subject by hand in fine ink from my photographs and include a high degree of detail to produce a realistic representation, with architectural perspectives. My works depict houses, public buildings, churches and tourist sites."
I am available for private commissions. For information on rates please contact me below. I also welcome gallery enquiries.
