Greg
Cromie lllustrator (Melbourne,
VIC) Greg
was born in 1973 and has lived and worked in Melbourne all of his life. He commenced
formal art training in 1992 with a year spent in folio preparation - Certificate
in Art and Design. This course allowed him to explore disciplines such as Drawing,
Graphic Design, Ceramics, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Print Making and Art
History. In 1993 he was accepted into an Industrial Design course at Swinburne
University School of Design in Melbourne. After studying
Industrial Design for two years, Greg's expressive and creative interests moved
beyond the aesthetic-design of electric toothbrushes and clock radios. His
creative eye turned towards the surreal worlds that cannot be solely controlled
by the kinds of design briefs that were prescribed during these two year. From
1995 he began to build his folio of Sci-Fi and Fantasy works and continued to
employ the disciplines learned in Industrial Design. Attention to detail, accurate
perspective, ergonomics, rendering techniques and controlled line are all key
aspects of Greg's illustrations. Since then he has continued to expand his folio,
exploring new concepts and creating new worlds, allwhilst raising two children. Greg's
influences are broad and range from the inspiring concepts described by Sci-Fi
& Fantasy authors such as David Gemmell, Robin Hobb and Raymond Fiest; the
architectural structures of Japanese homes, through to the industrialised world
of machines and technology. Most of his works are in black and white utilising
mediums such as pen & ink and graphite leads. The more technical illustrations
rely upon colour pencils, markers, gauche and ink to create a rendered effect. Greg
has had a small amount of commissioned work with his technical illustrations published
in medical journals. He is currently working towards his first illustration-based
exhibition in 2005 where he plans to showcase his artistic passion and ability
as an illustrator.
