Jean-jacques
Marchal
Visual Artist (Lismore,
NSW)
Jean-jacques,
or Minou as his friends call him, was born in 1953 in France (Aix-en
Provence) and spent 25 years in Paris before moving to Australia with
his wife Janet, a ceramics artist. He settled in the Northern Rivers
region of NSW (Lismore) and has been living and working there as an
artist there for the past 10 years, working with his wife and running
their ceramic business.
Jean-jacques
became involved in art at a very early age. He is mosly self-taught,
with some academic training in Paris, where he was involved in an artistic
movement (JEUNE PEINTURE). He has also undergone comics technical training,
and has conducted several solo exhibitions with modern abstraction painting.
Jean-jacques
personal history goes back to the Seventies hippy movement in Europe,
with a sejour in Christiania Copenhagen in the Eighties, then back to
Paris living in many different artist communities and setting up his
own state artist studio, always working a 'new way' with break throughs
in abstraction painting. Since
arriving in Australia, Jean-jacques has held solo and group exhibitions
Sydney, Newcastle, and Byron Bay. His works are apparently opposites
- black & white oil abstract expression paintings, the result of
his most personal research, colour oil "abstract-signs" paintings,
colour acrylic on paper "simplified geometric abstraction"
(most recent) and figurative realistic large black & white drawings.
