Miryam Simpson
Mosaic Artist (Palmwoods QLD)
My interest in mosaic as an art goes a long way back. As a geologist working among other places, in the Middle East I was drawn to excavations of mosaic floors in Roman towns and early Byzantine churches. I watched the famous Eilon Mosaic makers creating their wonderful pieces. My busy professional life did not allow me to actively take up mosaic making in practice until I decided to retire.
I settled on a rural property in the Sunshine Coast hinterland in 2003 and started actively creating pieces a few years later. My interests in creative mosaic are varied, using traditional techniques and recreating ancient mosaics; for example part of a floor in a Roman villa in Zippori, Israel (recently sold), loaves and fishes from a Byzantine church near Tiberias.
Inspirations of tribes from my travels along the west coast of Canada are depicted in the black/white fish and swan (now overseas). Naturally I am inspired by rock formations such as the oldest rocks containing the first life forms on Earth, in the Pilbara of Western Australia, made into a mosaic piece.
Selected by MAANZ for the 2011 touring exhibition. A current major project is a detailed mosaic work (spread on 4 panels) depicting the geological evolution of the Sunshine coast from 220 million years ago to present day. The emphasis is on eras/events that shaped the landscapes that we see today.
