Maureen O'Brien
Blues & Jazz Singer (Newcastle, NSW)
Maureen brings a wealth of life experience to her material and a big
sense of humour to her performances. She has a rich, mellow vocal sound
and selects material which best suits her vocal style. Her style crosses
multiple genres including Blues~Jazz~Contemporary Folk and a healthy
dose of Comedy.
PERFORMANCES
Maureen has performed in a variety of groups and duos as well
as being an accomplished solo performer for mature audiences. She has

As a blues performer, Maureen’s music is influenced by the likes
of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Diana Kraal, Tom Waits, Holly
Cole, and more. She often takes the Blues across to a jazz and swing
feel. She likes to ‘connect’ with her audience and take
them with her to ‘feel’ the music
MATERIAL
As a songwriter, she is not afraid to provoke and challenge her listeners
on ‘forbidden’ topics but will often flavour her songs
with humour. Her material can be described as a mixture of Blues-Folk
and every song has a story!
Her first CD Breaking the Habit was recorded in
1999 with her popular female a’cappella group Glass Slipper.
Her second CD “Many
Shades of Blue” was released in June 2005. [Note; all 3 of the
submitted songs from her new album were finalists in the ABC 1233 Music
Awards].
GIG HISTORY
Her performances occur in a wide variety of entertainment
experiences including; ‘Tastings on the Terrace’ (Sunday
afternoons in the vineyard/s & wineries)

functions, ‘lounge bar’ music

and boutique music

ARTIST STATEMENT:
I have been classified in many different
ways; as an 'interpretive' vocalist who can touch an audience's heart;
the wicked
woman of blues; a songwriter who writes simple yet powerful songs.
I think I am just a passionate musician with a thirst to be unique
and original.
