Christine Moore
Painter / Mixed Media Artist (Hobart TAS)
Although I am from a musical background, I have always been strongly attracted to all visual art forms and always loved drawing landscapes. I was born in Switzerland and did all my schooling there, as well as my music studies. I moved to Sydney in my twenties and lived there for twenty years.
I am a qualified piano teacher and also a primary school teacher. I spend most of my spare time drawing and painting and took up pastels five year’s ago when I moved to Hobart in Tasmania. Before that I used watercolours and silk painting. Over the last twenty years, I sold many handmade silk cards in Sydney and also in Switzerland.
I like to write children’s stories and had one published in the French Magazine ‘Toboggan’. I also wrote an article about my experience as a piano teacher. This was published in 2004 in the Sydney’s Child, Brisbane’s Child and Melbourne’s Child.
After moving to Tasmania, I was moved by the amazing light and colours of the island and had the urge to try pastel drawing. I attended the friendliest group of pastellists in Hobart, which helped me greatly in settling in our new life. I started by drawing scenes from Switzerland, where I grew up. I finally tried Australian scenes, as I fell in love with Tasmania. Now I tend to alternate Australian and Swiss landscapes, as well as cityscapes since last year.
I recently started using acrylics and mixed media, as I love discovering the characteristics of new mediums. I have never had an exhibition but participated in various competitions. As a fifteen year old, I won the Nestle competition in Switzerland with an oil pastel piece representing the past, present and future.
I love the process of drawing, painting and experimenting and I attach as much importance to the process as to the final product. I always have to be active with my hands and mind, whether it is playing piano, drawing or stroking my cat!
I have sold many pastels in Hobart through ‘word of mouth’ and I am happy to take commissions as well.

Artists Statement:
I love the colours and light filling my life and there isn’t a single day where I don’t marvel at the amazing shades of all colours around me. According to Mark Leach, who inspired me with the amazing vibrancy of his pastels, “Colour provides an almost limitless vocabulary with which to communicate how we see and how we feel” (M. Leach, 2006). I am learning the language of colours with passion and hope to become a fluent ‘speaker’ of this language one day.
