Demelza Gill
Painter (Ultimo, NSW)
I find that my work is often about a story, a feeling, or a place that I have been. So in a sense reflects all aspects of my personality, the things I like and have experienced. I try to convey the emotional context through imagery and colour and often find that my work says different things to different people, allowing the viewer to experience their own version of the ‘story’. I often like to ask people what they see.
I have become quite the amateur photographer (even if I do say so myself) and I take a lot of photographs when I am travelling with the pretence of coming home and making a work to evoke that memory.Having a keen eye, some of my photographs adorn the walls at Chateau Elan’s exclusive Spa Suites. Having now travelled extensively and each trip whether it be across this great land of ours or overseas I find more inspiration and more things to discover and influence my work. I’m heavily influenced by the impressionist era; the Japanese masters – Hokusai and Hokkaido; 1920’s poster art particularly works by Leonetto Capiello and Roger Broders.
I currently live and work in Ultimo and I love being so close to our Harbour; most of all I find inspiration in the every day, the quirks and comings-and-goings of inner city life.
I have been painting professionally since early 2000 and have entered my work in the junior categories at the Royal Easter Show, receiving certificates in the open drawing category and the ceramics category. After completing high school I started to show my work in group exhibitions at Fairfield School of Arts, and Wentworth Falls School of Arts; entered my work in the Adult ‘figure’ category at the Royal Easter Show, and had work shown at the Bowral Fine Art Gallery,Nelson Bay Community Art Gallery and Pine Steet Gallery in Chippendale. Most recently, I have worked with interior designers on a large scale project in the Hunter Valley NSW where my adaptability and professionalism shined.I have also commissioned pieces for clients in Japan and Australia. For information on how to purchase / commission my work please contact me below, or call 0414 609 352. Gallery enquiries welcome.
Artists Statement:
I love to travel and I'm so inspired by this world. My work can be quite diverse and sometimes hard to believe it comes from the same person. It’s this diversity that has appealed to a wide range of people who have purchased my work. My studio is now called Kamelion to reflect this evolution. Please view my work on my website www.kamelionstudios.com and feel free to drop me a line!
