George Hambov
Graffiti Artist 'Apeseven' (Harbord, NSW)
George grew up in 1980’s Sydney, skating
and exploring industrial areas of the lower northern beaches, consequently
being exposed to
a variety of street graffiti.
This led to his experimentation with street art, however it was not
until his 2 years working and living in London that he was exposed
to a new calibre of urban art works. Particularly inspiring was the
artistic street method of stencilling.
Returning to Australia he knew there should be a level of street
art that effects all people, not just other graffiti writers and
artists.
Stencilling was an accessible way of expressing his thoughts and
ideas onto the urban landscape.
Early influences were drawn from Saturday morning
cartoons and comic books. This developed to include Anime, Technology,
issues such as
World Politics, Social corruption, writers like Chuck Palanuik, good
music & friends. Other artistic sources of inspiration are Banksy,
Klutch, Doze Green, Akira Toriyama, H R Giger, Peter Klasen and many
others.
Other street works can be seen in ‘Stencil Pirates’ by
Josh McPhee, published by Soft Skull Press in 2004.
He currently works with a variety of media: oils, paste
ups, stickers with an interactive element, stencils and now clothing.
George currently studies fine arts at Northern Beaches TAFE.
Apeseven is a process of evolution. Art that will explore,
grow and change with our environment, technology and media.
