Hanna
Kay
Visual Artist
(Upper
Hunter Valley, NSW)
Born
in Israel, painter Hanna Kay has followed her artistic
inspirations across the world, to immerse herself
at times in the fast-paced intensity of urbanized
art centres such as Vienna, New York and Sydney, and
at times in the subtler intensity of the Australian
deserts, countryside and rural towns. Along the way,
Hanna has exhibited extensively solo, as well as in
collaboration with other artists, in Israel, Europe,
the U.S.A and Australia, establishing herself as an
international artist. Today, residing in both Sydneys
inner west and the Upper Hunter Valley in NSW, she
is inspired by the double and polarized life she leads,
regularly working for exhibitions in Melbourne, Adelaide
and Sydney. It seems that the transient nature of
Hannas life, in particular the relationship
that she establishes with a place, is the key to understanding
her work and generally her approach to painting.
The
themes in Hannas work range from the more natural environment,
realised in her paintings with trees, sticks, pebbles, stone-scapes,
cloud formations and implied fossils, to the more human environment
and psychology, realised with stairs, shoes, human shadows, ropes and
tokens of childhood games such as hopscotch, skipping rope and dolls.
By drawing upon familiar tokens from these environments, Hannas
choice of themes are the way she explores and challenges ways of perceiving
our surroundings as well as our human identities.
