Jane Canfield
Painter (Leura, NSW)

With a formal background in graphic design, and a father as professional artist, it was no wonder Jane too ventured into painting. With a flair for Pochoir, lino cut, oil and gouache painting Jane has won numerous awards and had many exhibitions and shows around Sydney.

Jane is interested in ‘plein air’ painting and goes on many road trips and adventures to fulfil her love of beautiful scenery - often doing sketches in ink or gouache; which are then created into larger oil works back in her studio.

“I am inspired by peaceful places and areas of human habitation that we sometimes discount as not attractive. I am inspired by the work of the Impressionists, the Fauve Movement, the Art Deco, and the Japanese style, in particular of the Ukiyoe prints of Kawase Hasui; and the Australian women artists of the 20s to 40s.”

“I am enthusiastic about many things such as; architecture, design, other artists, the past and present; different places, even lights and smells. Discovery and re-discovery are for me wonderful aspects of life – be it a new artist, finding a new place to paint, or revisiting a place in a different time of day or season.”
