Janet Tymmons
Painter (Willoughby NSW)

Janet is a Sydney based artist who executes her semi-abstract expressionistic works with a combination of oil and acrylics and found objects. Drawings are a mix of charcoal, conte and ink wash.

Janet is an arts graduate from the National Art School in East Sydney where she majored in painting. She studied under leading artists including John Coburn, Sid Ball and David Voight. She taught Art in High School for many years followed by Drawing at Paddington Art School. In 1989 she did a study tour of Egypt with the University of Sydney and in 1992 Art of the Renaissance Painting Tour in Italy. In 2001 she graduated with a Masters Degree in Visual Art at UTS in Sydney doing her major on The Blake Prize for Religious Art in which she encompassed 'The Art of Belief and Beyond' with the works of Kandinsky, Matisse, Chagall, Boyd and Coburn.

Janet claims "from nurturing many Art Express exhibits and encouraging countless nude sketches my passion now is to capture illusive imagination in colour. I respond to images with lashings of sumptuous paint. Subject wise, I look from the inside out. When painting, I find myself swept along with an intense momentum of ideation and colour. I work my colours and the gestures boldly over big canvasses so the viewer feels the underlying essence of my imagery. I am a follower of Picasso's beliefs - 'a green parrot is also a green salad'."

Janet expresses a visual narrative within a fiesta of colour on canvas. She has received numerous awards including The Sydney Water Prize in 1993. She regularly exhibits in group shows around Australia and has been a finalist twice in The Mosman Art Prize. Her exhibitions include 'Sands of Egypt' in 1995 and 'Cetacean' in 2002 at Norton Gallery McMahons Point. Her publications include 'A Word in Art' 1999 and 'The Spiritual in Art' 2001.

Janet is a member of The Workshop Arts Centre in Willoughby, where she frequents The Sketch Club as part of her art practice - in looking for 'the something more'. She believes drawing enriches one's perception of the visual world, and gives one the means of expressing them.
