John
Corby
Painter (Oyster
Bay, NSW)
John was born in 1958 and raised in
the Sutherland Shire, Sydney. He first took up oil
painting in 1983 after showing a keen interest and
aptitude for drawing. He is a self-taught artist who
has always admired the fresh, loose approach of the
early Australian artists from the Heidelberg School,
headed up by Streeton and Roberts.
Whilst John’s paintings are traditional
in essence, they have a wonderful ‘painterly’
feel which is much admired by both the public and
his peers. John paints primarily in oils and his subjects
range from
landscapes, the occasional still life, to popular
coastal scenes. His paintings are full of activity
as he captures people enjoying themselves in everyday
life and leisure.
John has won many awards for his work
including the Australian Artist magazine’s national
seascape competition in 2001. He regularly demonstrates
and teaches art throughout Sydney and New South Wales
and is reknowned for conducting workshops which are
well structured and easy to follow.
To date, John’s paintings have
been reproduced in the form of eight limited edition
giclee prints depicting various scenes of the greater
Sydney basin. John is a regular contributor to Australian
Artist magazine, having appeared in the Oct 2000,
Dec 2000, April 2001, Dec 2002, April 2004, July 2004
and December 2005 issues.
John is currently working on a book
titled 'The Finishing Touch', a tutorial on how to
paint with oils. Scheduled for release in late 2007,
the book will contain 8 step-by-step demonstrations,
tips and advice on colour, painting techniques, making
the most of your subject and how to stay motivated.
