Michael
Berry
Visual Artist
(Melbourne,
VIC)
Drawing since he could hold a pencil, Michael initially ventured into science and the rigours of scientific illustration before he abandoned research for artistic enquiry. He has studied all the great artistic masters across the disciplines and sees that painting is indeed not dead, but the problem is that few have ever understood the true relationship of visual imagination in our human thinking processes.
Michael does not believe in artistic 'expression' or inspiration. Rather art is purely the mapping of the human consciousness and its measurements of who we are, set against the background of perceptive reality.
Michael is a puplished author and poet, and writes regularly on art for Visitor Magazine in Victoria.
Michael recently completed a large international commission (two 4.5x1.5metre paintings and a diptych 4x3metres) for a Marina in Singapore. He has held more than ten solo exhibitions - the next being August / September 2007 at Glen Eira City Hall Gallery in Melbourne.
Michael has also held group and solo exhibitions in regional galleries, and numerous group exhibitions in private galleries. He has been commissioned for public sculpture in country regions in Victoria, and has shown at the National Gallery of Victoria and other sculpture bi / triennials, as well as a finalist in a number of international competitions. Recently his website was singled out for an award medallion.
Artists Statement
"The paintings arise from the enquiry into how the brain visually functions - from past memories and interactions, in conjunction with the perceptive input from what is happening now at the time of the painting. They are spatial maps exploring and expanding the universal visual language of art.
