Sean O'Shea
Painter (Byron Bay NSW)
I live in Byron Bay on the far north coast of New South Wales, the most easterly point of Australia. Byron Bay is breath-takingly beautiful and a haven for artists of all disciplines. For thousands of years indigenous peoples have respected the area for it's healing power. Painting and drawing is a means of expressing and recording my everyday life, I paint daily and enjoy long walks to help evoke the creative spirit. Through walking I observe and absorb all that surrounds me. Being disciplined in practice allows me not to think about the how or why, the vision is revealed through personal experience with the image.
My work reveals the universality of beauty and pain, to try and capture what lies beneath the unseen and to explore figures and textures that landscape the human condition. Observation of people and everyday objects interest me, I want to reveal the stories behind the eyes. My images infuse a feeling of what I experience with the subject whether they be person or inanimate object.
The studio is a place where I can enter other realms, my oasis. I explore composition without over analysing the outcome. The first brush-stroke is the beginning of an untold story. The colour, codes, insights and intuition that I feel takes shape and form allowing the image to move and come alive, breaking the static. I work with the finest handcrafted linen and canvas and paint with oils and acrylics.
