Sharon Mearing
Painter, Mixed Media Artist (Helensburgh, NSW)

Sharon Mearing was born in Wollongong in 1959. She attended Sydney’s Alexander Mackie C.A.E. from 1977 - 80 and graduated from Sydney Teacher’s College in 1981. She has participated in several group shows and regional competitions, exhibiting in her first solo show in 1993 at Art Arena in Wollongong. Throughout the intervening years she has taught Visual Arts in NSW High Schools, Adult Education Colleges and reared a family while continuing to create art.

Artists Statement
“My art making has lead me to explore various subjects from my environment. Having lived in sheep grazing countryside and in close proximity to dense coastal bushland I have been inspired by spaces, panoramas and vignettes of the views around me. Stemming from a visual language about landscape, many pictures have an abstract ambiguity that can be read as conventional landscape, topography and aerial views. Symbolism ranges from geometric shape to organic form in an effort to evoke curiosity in the viewer about possible associations.

My art making is a process of intuition, discovery and at times collaboration with my partner. Motivation comes from a desire to make pictures that have beauty and that one can live with. They condense personal experience, aesthetic pleasure in colour and sometimes a melding of text, found images and collage.

These recent paintings have a link to a series of images generated initially on computer but have been mediated in paint and mixed media. The mediation allows for enrichment of surface with texture, tonal gradation and detail not possible in the digital form. The works are of a scale appropriate to most domestic and commercial spaces and incorporate colours and themes that complement contemporary interiors.”
