I am a multimedia artist with interests in photography, graphic & web design, digital art and installations. I come from a family of photographers and artists. My mother is a painter and sculptor. I grew up in that kind of environment - lots of art books, pictures, sculptures, photos and artifacts…I don’t know if artistic ability is handed down through the genes but I am sure that that kind of upbringing rubs off on you in more ways than one. From a young age I was fascinated with historic images and photography, and I was always looking at coffee table books, magazines, cartoons and art.

I am very much a ‘visual’ person, always scanning my surroundings and homing in on detail. I often take photos of the ‘mundane, of things that are around us all the time that we don’t really notice, like old doors and windows, footpaths, peeling paint, crumbling buildings, bits of steel etc…

I am particularly fond of architecture, furniture, objects d’art and fashion from the deco period through to the seventies, especially the 1950’s and 60’s. I also think that my Dutch heritage and living in third world countries has had a lot of influence on my choice of subjects, composition, materials and colours.

Some of the other themes my work include texture, the natural and built environment, the social gap between first and third world countries, indigenous issues, the destruction of the environment and our addiction to technology.

These photo boxes represent images from all over the world: Italy, Tasmania, West Africa, Australia and Holland. They depict people, animals, wood, grass, stone, steel and plastic. Some of them represent my empathy with people’s desire to be different, or recognized in their own right… some represent my love of animals and nature.

Occasionally I find unexpected details in my photos, which must be my subconscious mind and character capturing the image as well as the camera. In most of them you will find my favourite aspect of shooting photos: capturing texture, detail and symmetry.
