Sean Davey
Photographer (Haberfield, NSW)
Sean Davey studied photography under Trevor Dunbar (now Head of Visual Arts) at Canberra Grammar School. He first became interested in documentary photography through his father's collection of Life books on World War II. Not realising at the time, Sean was looking at photos made by Eugene Smith and Cartier-Bresson, photographers whose work he would later study closely.
Sean studied a Bachelor of Communication, Television Production at the University of Canberra, where he met cinematographer Mike Barnett. Barnett taught Sean about cimematography and light, and helped Sean get his first job at SBS Television in Canberra. Working as a sound recordist and assistant editor for twelve months, Sean then freelanced for ABC, Channel 9 and Channel 10.
In 2000 Sean moved from Canberra to Sydney to begin a photography traineeship with Fairfax Media. He covered the 2001 Federal Election Campaign for the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and the Sun Herald.
In 2003 Sean resigned from his full time position travelled to Europe and The United States, where he photographed personally, as well as accepting commercial and editorial assignments.
Sean is currently working on his second book of photographs “Dog Food & Oysters”.

Artist Statement
"I like to photograph because it helps me to see the world as it really is. There are things that the camera notices that naked eyes have trouble seeing. My photographs rarely have captions because they don't need them. The photographs are not merely representations of what has been photographed, but are new and independent objects in their own right. Photography is the knife's edge where reality meets fiction and the most moving photographs have equal amounts of each. "
