Bernie
Meyers Printmaker / Mixed Media
(Warriewood, NSW) Bernie
is a Sydney artist living in the Northern Beaches area. She is endlessly fascinated
with the world of nature, from the details of a feather to the enormous power
of the thundering ocean. Her work is strongly influenced by her spirituality;
"I believe that this beautiful planet was created by an awesome God. I love
how the rhythms of life overlap and interweave with one another." "The
tide line is probably my most frequented source of reference. I cant resist
collecting treasures and noticing the uniqueness of every piece. Spending time
drawing these delicate objects gives me an opportunity to immerse myself in intriguing
miniature worlds and appreciate every aspect of them. Each piece carries its own
story, shaped by the elements of time, water, wind and sun and influenced by the
changing seasons. They are all fragments of a larger picture, each one reliant
on all of the others to continue the circle of life." "The
abstract elements of design are for me the tools of communication. Often working
in series I explore a concept and break down the idea into visual language. Each
artwork is complete in itself but fits into the series to work as a group of images.
The entirety of my work is not usually apparent at first glance but a subtle symbolism
weaves through the images. " Most of Bernie's pictures
are works on paper, including printmaking, pastel and mixed media. Her training
was in traditional etching techniques, however for the past few years she has
been working with solarplate. She uses original artwork to make a negative which
is transferred onto the plate using UV light. The plates are processed by scrubbing
out the soft unexposed areas of polymer in water. After the plate has been hardened
in the sun it is permanent. She uses both intaglio and relief
plates and ink and print them in the traditional way on an etching press. Although
her prints are editioned they all tend to be unique, as she varies the ink colour
and hand colouring and uses different combinations of layers. Bernie's
work has been exhibited in numerous solo, invitation and group exhibitions and
currently her work is on consignment in Lake Russell Gallery-Coffs Harbour, Bare
Bones Art Space-Bangalo and Advance Framing-Crows Nest. She has worked on commissions,
graphic design and magazine photography. Since 1995 Bernie
has taught printmaking, drawing, pastel and mixed media at School of Creative
Arts Oxford Falls. She also teaches many individual classes and group workshops
for both adults and children. Contact
