David
Preston
Printmaker & Linocut Artist
(Whale Beach, NSW)
David Preston is one of Australia's finest contemporary printmakers.
His work has been exhibited around Australia and internationally, and The
National Gallery of Australia currently hold 61 of his limited edition linocut
prints in their public collection.
David
was born in 1948 and graduated from the National Art School in 1971. During
1978 he established Etchers Press in Brett Whiteleys Reiby
Place studio, creating etchings and linocuts for for some of Australia's
finest artists including Whiteley, Judy Cassab, Charles Blackman and John Olsen,
to
name a few.
David is reknown for his large format linocuts, which draw inspiration
from classic Japanese woodcuts and Ukiyo-e (the floating world), the Japanese
artform where space is deliberately flattened in order to draw our eye to the
natural harmonies
and contrast of form
and colour.
He has travelled the world extensively, and during 2000 to 2003
based himself in Geneva, Switzerland. He would journey often to France on painting
trips, and on one occasion whilst painting in Arles South France, became
friends
with the
administrator
of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, the asylum
hospital in Saint-Remy where Vincent Van Gogh was incarcerated from 1889 to
1890. The administrator invited David to paint the view from Vincent's former
room in the asylum, the same room where Vincent created a vast collection
of drawings,
sketches, studies and some of his most famous paintings.
David spent several
days painting the view from Van Gogh's window, and turned the resulting oil
painting into a stunning linocut titled Van Goghs Garden. This work, along
with other paintings and linos created during his European sojourn, were exhibited
at Alliance Francais in Sydney in 2004.
On his return from Europe in 2003, David setup his art studio
on Manly Corso, where he painted and sketched local landscapes and beachscapes.
In 2005 he moved to Avalon on Sydney's northern beaches, where he met and married
his beautiful wife Jenni, and moved to Whale Beach where he currently lives
and
works.
David has a vast collection of limited edition linocut prints
available for purchase from the artsConnect
Online Art Catalogue and via his
