Linocut & Etchings
(Sydney, NSW)
Raised
in the largest Polynesian city in the world - Auckland, New Zealand,
Susan's art style has been heavily influenced by the Polynesian cultures
of the South Pacific. The
Polynesian simplification of form such as the Tivaevae quilts, Kowhaiwhai
designs and Tukutuku panels have impressed upon her the beauty of strong
simple lines. Her subject matter has also been influenced by her deep
love of nature.
She
chooses flowers that are strongly associated with the subtropical environment
of her upbringing, such as the Hibiscus and the Frangipani. The intense
colours that she uses in many works are from the lush green of the New
Zealand rainforest, the bright red of the Pohutukawa flower and the
vibrant yellow of the Kowhai flower.
Susan
now lives and works on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. This
area provides the ideal setting to inspire and nurture her creativity.
Her love of the ocean, native flora and fauna, and the ethnic designs
of the country's indigenous cultures provides Susan with a never ending
source of ideas. Her ability to capture the spiritual essence of the
subject is conveyed through her original prints.
The
colourful original etchings and linocut prints featured on Hibiscus
Art are inspired by the bold images of South Pacific shells, flowers
and designs.
