Andy
Schmidt
Wood Sculptor, Carver,
Stone Mason, Glass Artist (Pymble, NSW)
Andy was born and raised in Sydney. After attending and
graduating from Sydney College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Visual
Arts (maj: Sculpture) in 1990, he went on to become self taught in the
intricacies of wood turning.
Having a passion for the uniqueness and diversity of the
Australian flora and fauna, Andy focuses exclusively on Australian Hardwood
(Eucalypts.) All of his wood is obtained from suburban tree felling
and rural road clearings.
What is quickly becoming a trademark of Andy's work is
the sheer size of his sculptures. On average, most finished pieces measure
1.65m in diameter, making Andy one of the largest scale wood turners
in the world.
Throughout the past few years Andy has collaborated with
some of Australia's most renowned sculptors and wood turners. Since
1990, his work has been shown in galleries throughout NSW. Some of Andy's
pieces are also held in private collections in Europe and North America.
Andy continues to push the boundaries of wood turning
and lathe work in Australia. His goals remain the same. Achieve excellence
in the engineering and the finishing of his pieces, and to push the
materials beyond their expected limitations.
