Wood Sculpture (Sydney, NSW)
Thomas
Goldschmidt's mission is to make the gift of trees a part of our every
day life again, transformed anew. This is reflected in his functional
and decorative objects.
Tom
started woodturning and carving in 2000. Fully self-trained on the background
of dental-techniques and Eurythmy, an art of movement initiated by R.
Steiner, Tom developed his form - language. His inspiration has come
from great artists, nature and the timber itself. He works mainly with
Australian Eucalypts, along with native and a few introduced species
depending on availability. The main source of timber comes from his
friend 'Matt the Tree-Fella', a tree-lopper that works in and around
Sydney with his crew.
Tom
usually picks the timber up in log-form. After they have been turned
into rough shapes, about 20-40mm thick, they undergo a curing-process.
This takes 3-6 weeks depending on species and size. The
cured objects return to the lathe and are trued and sanded. Design and
carving is the first process then the pieces are treated with ORGAN
OIL, a non-toxic product and hand-polished. Functional objects get an
additional, food-safe, resin-coating.
The
decorative objects are all individually designed. They cannot be reproduced,
although he sometimes create a small series with a design-theme that
undergoes a form of metamorphosis. Tom's
work has been exhibited in galleries throughout Australia and can be
found in private collections throughout the world.
