Christian
Taylor
Writer
/ Playwright (Sydney, NSW)
Christian's fascination with writing lies within people;
the characters he creates and those he finds himself surrounded by.
Therefore, the pull towards writing for performance seemed a natural
one. "Growing up in rural NSW drove me to it," he says, "I
felt dislocated from the world I found myself within and creating people
and their stories in my mind was what kept me alive."
Christian is now a Sydney based emerging writer who graduated
from a Creative Writing and Cultural Studies degree at University of
Technology in 2002. Since graduation Christian has had a number of smaller
projects come to fruition, but feels he is ready to turn his energies
towards a larger solo work now. "I want to tackle a full length
solo stageplay next, something challenging that showcases what I can
really do."
Christian's work is character driven; his belief being
that the truth of a work comes from the characters and from what they
choose to keep to themselves.
"I was very heavily affected by my time in the country.
I felt and still feel a great need to be heard. When something you have
created makes an audience feel something - an emotion of your own choosing
- well, there is nothing else like it."
After graduation Christian began writing book reviews
for www.talkingfish.com.
His text based installation 'Passion Wash Me Clean - a monologue to
love' was exhibited at Gallery 4a in Haymarket at the end of 2003. "This
project was great for me - it forced me to work away from pens and paper
- and it allowed me to explore a character that was 'heard', but never
seen."
Not long after that, Christian's short play "Your
Little Mausoleum" was featured as part of the "Short and Sweet"
festival at Newtown Theatre in January 2004. His short fiction piece,
"The Difference Night Makes" was selected for reading at "Hot
Summa Nights" - a live literary event held at the Glasshouse Bar
in Melbourne as part of the 2004 Midsumma Gay and Lesbian Festival.
Christian is also branching out into radio. He has recently
completed the first draft of a radio drama entitled "A Clairvoyant
Told Me I Would Meet You", which explores privacy, the workplace
and where individuals draw the line between hopes and truth. He currently
writes for and co-hosts the breakfast radio program "Radiospleen"
on Sydney's 2RRR (88.5FM).
He is also working on a full-length collaborative play
entitled "Heroes: A Tale Of Men Not Women", which will be
produced late 2004 by Sydney based "Dancing Giant Productions".
Christian is interested in connecting with literary agents
and producers.
