McParland
Writer
& Publisher (Sydney, NSW)
Born
in Sydney, Australia just as the "Golden Age" of rock and
roll was beginning, Stephen grew up with the music. At first its raunchy
rhythms and harmonic blends did not catch his immediate attention. However,
the beach did. At the age of three he tackled the waves of North Wollongong
Beach on his surf-o-plane and by his mid-teens he had progressed to
being a proficient surfboard rider. By this time, the sounds of The
Beach Boys and other protagonists of the "surfing sound" had
also caught his attention. It was also at this point that his ever-present
interest in "surfing music" blossomed into the area of record
collecting eventually he gave way to collecting and chronicling his
favourite musical genre.
Since
then, Stephen has become a well-known and well-respected figure in both
the record collecting and musical research and documentation fields
- an acknowledged worldwide expert on surf music and its related musical
offshoots. Stephen's
additional credits include contributions to numerous record/CD repackages,
both locally and internationally; a limited series of "one-off"
publications involving various aspects of his favourite musical genre;
the formation of a record label devoted to bringing to life long lost
and forgotten archival material; and three self-published magazines.
Currently,
Stephen operates California Music, incorporating CMusic Publishing and
CMusic Archives; the former responsible for publishing Stephen prodigious
output of books; and the latter a resource for record companies, print
media, film and TV companies needing material in the field of surf and
hot-rod music.
