Urban Expressions : Street Art & Graffiti on Canvas
Since the emergence of ‘New York style’ graffiti
20 years ago, graffiti has been subject to intense debate, whether it be social
values, freedom of expression, property ownership or artistic merit.
While the debate continues, one thing is certain: graffiti art has carved
a permanent niche in pop culture and there is no sign of it diminishing as
a universal expression of youth and hip hop culture.
‘Urban Expressions’ is a new exhibition in
Manly that explores graffiti and street art and its place in Australian contemporary
art.
The exhibition is presented by artsConnect as part of the
Manly Arts Festival 2005, and runs from 3 September to 2 October 2005 at
The artRoom Upstairs Gallery, Level 1 106a The Corso Manly.
The exhibition features 10 emerging artists from the northern
beaches , showcasing work from graffiti on canvas, stencil and vinyl art, digital
art and
photo
collage, mixed media
installations and street art using traditional mediums such as acrylic and
oil on canvas. A range of hand-printed street wear and wearable art are also
be on display.
