VIC Melbourne jazz n funkosonic regulars
Ryan Griffith and Karl Willebrant met in a smoky jazz bar in the Melbourne suburb
of Brunswick. They shared many beers and in the ensuing weeks and months developed
a friendship based on a love of music and a deep respect for the other's playing.
And so they migrated from the sweaty club gigs to a crowded but comfy studio in
leafy Parkville to embark upon a journey of collaboration. Non Linear Effect is
a marriage of their collective influences and skitty personalities. Karl
Willebrant earned his stripes playing enormously funky bass lines in tribal funk
band Ruby Fruit Jungle and the sessional studios of Sydney before landing in Melbourne
via his hometown Hobart. He has performed alongside some of Oz' blues and funk
greats and is a regular on the festival circuit. Since completing the EP, he has
once again journeyed back to Sydney where he is becoming one with the blues and
the beaches. Ryan Griffith won Triple J's Unearthed Competition
in 1996 as the guitarist and co-songwriter in Albury's Zappa-esque Crunch Funk
trio Humbug. Since then he has focused on jazz and compositional work, winning
a number of grants and awards including composition for the Sydney Olympics in
2000. His work has been released throughout the UK and the US. His sonic investigations
with all things fishy alongside web artist Pip Shea during their residency at
the Melbourne Aquarium has received rave reivews. Check out the site: www.aquaarts.com.au/ectopia
