The
Wet Suits
Sydney
All
members of The Wetsuits have been performing in influential Australian
and International rock bands since the early '80's.
In
the late '90's they decided to change their dark clothing for bright
Hawiian shirts and got together for a bit of fun, playing the type of
instrumental songs that had inspired them to play music in the first
place. Their music conjures up fantasies of chilling out on a hot summer
night, sipping cocktails in a Tiki lounge with a beautiful woman by
your side, rather than the daytime activity of lying on the beach or
participating in the physical sport of riding the wild surf as evoked
by other surf bands.
The
band members are Clyde Bramley on guitar (ex New Christs / The Hoodoo
Gurus), Stephen 'Bones Martin on guitar (ex Deadly Hume/Fester Bros/SkinDiver/Midnight
Goblins), Katrina Amis on organ (ex Chrome Kitten) John Scholfield on
bass (ex Grooveyard / Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls) and Marucs
Schintler on drums.
Their
style of music incorporates instrumental, surf/spy movie and tv themes,
and they perform in front of a backdrop screen with projected film clips
of 1960's spy and comedy tv programmes which most of us 'baby boomer's'
had watched as children. It's fun to try and pick out the titles of
vaguely remembered TV and movie themes as well as listen to their original
compositions which perfectly compliment the older songs, bringing the
genre into the 21st century.
The
Wetsuits play a monthly residency at the Hoptoun Hotel on the first
Saturday of each month in conjunction with Surry Hills Street Market.
