Manly, NSW
While
going to University in London, UK born guitarist, Mike 'Geezer' Plested
would go to see gigs by bands performing in the burgeoning post punk
Psychobilly scene as well as touring Europe as guitarist for The Skunks.
Upon relocating to the Northern Beaches of Sydney in the early '90's
he noticed that, although the live Sydney music scene was dominated
by Garage Punk,Surf and Neo Rockabilly bands, there was no real Psychobilly
scene. Cutting his teeth in local northern beaches band The Bedheads,
he then established Voodoo Monkeys.
They
gained a fervent local following, eventually breaking into the inner
city pub circuit and touring with OZ rock legends Rose Tattoo and X.
They released several recordings but being on the brink of national
success, they experienced a major set back when their guitarist / vocalist
decided to depart in order to travel around the world, leaving them
without a singer. The Voodoo Monkeys then took a 2 year hiatus spent
redefining their sound in which many musicians passed through the line
up for various periods of time.
The
re-invented VM'S emerged in late 2002 with a new look and sound, 'The
Geezer' being the only original member, the original rhythm section
having been replaced by former Stone bass player Luke, and new drummer
known as The Jakal and the addition of charismatic front man singer/guitarist
Tobe 'Le Rone' completing the line up.
The bands psychobilly stylings having been dropped for an intense contemporary
alternative rock sound, described as groove-driven rock'n'roll with
a 60's garage-punk twist. With an album worth of new original material
ready for release and a tight live repetoir, The Voodoo Monkeys are
ready to join the new wave of talented and innovative Australian bands
in their onslaught towards international contemporary music domination.
