Beverley Gibbs
Painter (Mona Vale NSW)
Beverley Gibbs was born in Zimbabwe and studied Music and Fine Art at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. She is a professional violinist as well as a painter.
She lived on a farm in Zimbabwe, and being inspired by her surroundings, she painted the changes of season and the light on the land: the cattle being herded through the dust by farm workers, and the men, women and children themselves - gossiping, selling vegetables at the markets, carving and digging in their kraals. The final painting in Zimbabwe was of the evicted workers leaving their home of many, many years. She creates in both oils and watercolours. There was a large studio on the farm. This was visited by tourists, and workshops were held there. Her paintings have been bought by people from Africa, UK, most European countries, USA and Australia.
In 2001 when she was forced to abandon the farm in Zimbabwe, she moved to Cambridge, UK. Here she taught painting again and became part of the musical scene. Her African paintings were exhibited in London and Cambridge.
She settled in Australia in 2006 and has now started to take inspiration from her surroundings on this continent. From the middle of a land-locked country to the coast of Australia takes place a change in colours and light. One group of sea interpretations depict surfers on the waves and another, the vast and stormy Southern Ocean. A painting of the Flinders Desert and another of the Blue Mountains are part of the new collection.
