Transform trash into treasure! Textile artists will be challenged by ‘The Art of Recycling’ in a new competition for the upcoming Textile Art Festival, Brisbane Exhibition Centre, May 29 – 31, 2009. With $2,000 in cash to be won, the competition will challenge textile artists to create an artwork made predominantly from textiles and recycled materials.
Open to all textile artists, the competition has two categories: ‘Wearable art’ and ‘Textile Art to Live With’. In addition to the $1,000 up for grabs in each category (a total prize pool of $2,000), ‘The Art of Recycling’ will provide textile artists with the opportunity to express their creativity, show off their recycling skills and be part of a brand new exhibition.
By displaying artworks made from objects and textiles that would normally be thrown away; ‘The Art of Recycling’ aims to raise awareness on the importance of resource conservation by reducing, reusing and recycling. As well, it gives creative people a chance to use wonderful fabrics that may not be available in stores today, vintage garments from charity stores that can be given new life or materials that would otherwise not be considered for a craft project.
When it comes to techniques, textile artists will be given free reign, but will need to create their original designs predominately from textiles and at least 50% recycled materials.
Displayed over the duration of the Textile Art Festival, finalists will be selected by a panel based on their creativity and design appeal. Winners of each category will be announced at the Festival.
If you think you have what it takes to win ‘The Art of Recycling’, or the idea of having your work on exhibition appeals, visit www.textileart.com.au or call (02) 9452 7575 for more information and an entry form. But hurry, entries must be received before April 24, 2009.
