Calling for expressions of interest for an exhibition, to be held 21 April -
2 May 2010 at Synergy Gallery (artist-run contemporary gallery with a commitment to community projects) in High Street, Northcote.
I am looking for works that include, incorporate or focus upon text. Generally text will be the most important component of the work. Text may or may not be legible.
It may or may not be comprehensible. Text may or may not derive from literature, letters or advertising. It may be the artist's own original writing. Text may be utilised for its formal or aesthetic qualities. Text may be poetic, didactic, playful, autobiographical, political or cathartic.
Artists whose work has inspired this exhibition include Melbourne-based printmaker Angela Cavalieri; book artist Alex Selenitsch; also Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer and Colin McCahon, late of New Zealand. Text is also significant in many works by Australian artists Jenny Watson and Mike Brown.
For many of the artists whose text-based work I admire there are strong links to literature - either making reference to published works by other writers, or it may be concrete poetry, literature AS visual image.
For others the primary interest may be in the formal or abstract quality of text or in semantics/language/linguistics, the various ways in which words may/have been interpreted/understood.
Deadline for expressions of interest - Tuesday 6 April.
Exhibition fee: $50 Members / $60 Non-members for up to 1 square metre of wallspace (similar fees for 3D sculptural work). Payment is cash, money-order or cheque on delivery of work. Synergy Gallery takes a commission of 20 % on sales.
