Call for Artists : Chalk Urban Art Festival 2008

Call for Artists : Chalk Urban Art Festival 2008
Deadline: 17 July 2008, Sydney NSW

Chalk Urban Art Festival is calling for applications from adult artists (over 18) to compete for the title of Champion Chalk Artist and prize money. Artists are required to produce a 2m x 3m chalk artwork over the 4 days of the Festival.

About Chalk Urban Art Festival

From Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th September 2008, Darling Harbour will again host artists from around Australia to take part in the only four day chalk art event in the southern hemisphere, Chalk Urban Art Festival.

Tumbalong Park will come alive with colour as a multitude of artists transform the street into a canvas, adorned with over 40 individual chalk artworks in the search for the Champion Pavement Artist 2008.

After three successful years, which drew over 120 000 keen spectators each year to the chalked pavements of Pyrmont Bridge, 2008 will see an even bigger and more colourful festival. Chalk Urban Art Festival now includes an urban music program, street theatre, graffiti workshops, spoken word / performance poetry, a wearable art showcase & urban fashion parade, food stalls and art workshops.

Over the next 3 months Chalk will select 40 artists to compete on the pavement and 20 designers to showcase their talent in the wearable art showcase. Creator and producer of Chalk Andi Mether, from Zest Events, wanted to create a unique and interactive way for artists to relate to and inspire new audiences with the festival expecting over 150 000 pedestrians stopping by this year.

The winning pavement artist as chosen by 3 independent judges will receive $5,000 in prize money and the title of Champion Pavement Artist. The general public can also vote for the People’s Choice Award as they browse the pavement.

Urban Art is a way to communicate with the public. Visitors will have the opportunity to take part in the festival by talking to the artists, participating in the various activities and enjoying the music, the street theatre, the food on offer and exploring the urban fashion stalls.

Applications close 17 July, 2008.

Festival Dates: 4 - 7 September 2008
Location: Pyrmont Bridge, Darling Harbour, Sydney, Australia
