Call for Artists : Cricket Art Prize 2009

Call for Artists : Cricket Art Prize 2009
Deadline: 25 September 2009

A new art prize has been created offering AU$20,000 to the winning painting and international exposure to the finalists. The Cricket Art Prize endeavours to bring the cricket community and the art world together from their contrasting lifestyles in our national psyche.

Australia's history and sense of identity are linked to cricket and our social interactions are often complimented with some form of the game, whether that is beach cricket, backyard cricket, social-cricket or local club cricket.

Art echoes the emotions, beliefs and prejudices in a community that influence thought, behaviour and personality.  Artists will be asked to use the national pastime, game and sport of cricket as the vehicle to unsettle preconceptions, generate new ideas and consider our contemporary culture.

Sydney Cricket Ground Trust Chief Executive Officer, Mr Jamie Barkley commented; “I feel I speak for all SCG members and SCG cricket fans when I say that we are very excited to be one of the principal sponsors for the Cricket Art Prize 2009.

"The official opening and two week exhibition in the Members Pavilion will be quite an occasion and will not only serve the interests of all Australians fascinated in art and cricket, but also feature as a regular event on the SCG calendar.”

The first prize has been generously underwritten by Kevin Maloney. He is the founder and Executive Chairman of MAC Services Group. Kevin has had an extensive career in retail banking, finance, and resources and joined Elders Resources in 1981 after spending 20 years with the ANZ Bank.

A Cricket Art Prize painting is a composition representing or depicting some aspect of the game and sport of cricket, and may feature figurative, still-life, figure-in-landscape themes in settings of backyard cricket, beach cricket, social-cricket or local club cricket.  The style may be representative, abstract or semi-abstract.

There is an image pre-selection process i.e. a CD or DVD containing high quality jpeg images of the artist’s entry must contain 2 full-frame high quality jpegs of the completed work with up to 4 ‘detail’ images, which will show the surface, texture and finish of the work. The inaugural opening and exhibition will be September - October 2009.
