Chris
Gallagher
Singer
& Songwriter (Manly, NSW)
Chris
Gallagher has always been passionate about music but never dreamed he
would be writing and recording his own songs. Chris is a Ferryman based
at Manly Wharf assisting passengers with tickets and questions of shedules
and with local knowledge for the tourists. It's there he drew inspiration
from his surroundings to create one of his most popular songs "
Ferry Across the Blue". There is never a dull moment at Manly Wharf
says Chris, and it's the passengers comments and conversations he picked
up on to inspire the lyrics for this song.
Chris
has been with Sydney Ferries for fifteen years, and before that he was
a professional fisherman. His music came about in a rather unexpected
way," I had gone through some ups and downs in my life as most
people do and began writing about my life as a way of clearing my head."
Chris said he soon turned the words into song lyrics and initially wrote
these to release some emotional baggage. Chris has since written and
recorded 23 songs on two albums and he has taken the pains to ensure
he owns the music. Although Chris had never sung a note in his life,
it didn't stop him from taking singing lessons, finding a recording
studio musician / engineer '' Lindsay Rimes''' and two female backing
singers to make his journey possible. Chris has been interviewed and
had songs played on various radio stations and on Radio Northern Beaches
with several 30 minute segments of his songs and talked about life on
the ferries, Chris has also had airplay and interviews on some ABC stations
around Australia.
Just
as he used music to overcome some of his past ordeals, Chris is now
assisting others in the same way, copies have been given to many support
groups, rehabilitation centres and even prisons, where one inmate wrote
to his friend and prison chaplain the '' Reverend John Tully" asking
him for a copy to take home with him when he finally leaves the prison. Chris says it's never too late to change or try something
new. So if your feeling blue I hope your ferry comes in for you and
takes you on your journey your god has made for you!
