Artists Statement:
“Becoming a mother has impacted on my painting
with the images becoming more whimsical and
colourful and the act of painting becoming a more
powerful medative process.......”
About the Artworks : "Mum ...Speaking latin with a singlet tan"
The works on this page are an exploration of that
troublesome, turbulent yet sometimes joyous rite of
passage into motherhood.
The paintings are based in the Australian landscape
where I spent sixteen months travelling with my
eighteen month old child and his father. Eight months
of these I was pregnant with my second child.
Though
my initial aim was to document photographically the
bushland communities in Australia, (a little grandiose),
this plan was abandoned due to broken cameras,
broken light meters and no money. I was depressed and displaced, yet kept an extensive visual diary,
(drawing) regarding place and psychological state.
These paintings are a culmination of the records of
this journey, both geographically and emotionally. The
Helichrysum studded plains of the dry interior to the
dune country of the coast co-exist with the intensity
of emotion and its irrational and somewhat labile
nature.
I have constructed the paintings as stories.
Autobiographical yet I believe universal. I source
children’s art and use personal symbols, juxtaposing
these elements of fantasy and abandonment with
the restraint of adult anxieties and histories.
