Dara
Quinlan
Singer/Songwriter
(Northern Beaches, Sydney)
Dara's
passion for music started at an early age in Cork Ireland. Encouraged
by her family, her debut performance was with sisters Niamh and Siobhan
under the auspices of their faither, Michael Quinlan. This
musical venture was known as the 'Bride Valley Trio'.
Dara
went on to study drama whilst performing with the 'Montford Singers'
in Cork Ireland. On completing her education she dallied with photography
and travel, having her ever present guitar by her side, whether on Cape
Clear Island West Cork where she wrote her first song 'Cleire', or on
the Lebanese border of Israel in 1982.
Dara performed with various line-ups in Cork
and was present during the melting pot period of Jimmy McCarthy, Declan
Sinnott and Sonny Condell, to name but a few inspirations. She spent
five years living on the Beara Peninsula and profited from the rich
traditional culture in that area.
Michael Dwyer, a true Irish composer and instrumentalist,
was to become a major influence in Dara's work. On moving to Australia,
she based herself in Cairns (North Queensland) and spent many years
composing and performing live, and recorded several CD's with different
musicians.
Now based in Sydney on the northern beaches, Dara's
latest recording 'Talk To Me' features a mix of ballads and contemporary
songs that reflect her strong Irish background. "My style is not
particulary folk"says Dara. "I syncopate words and stretch
vowels in a traditionally Irish way, and while the culture has definitely
influenced by music I wouldn't call myself an Irish folk singer."
'Talk to Me' was recorded live in Sydney and features
original songs with an eclectic mix of fiddle, harp, didjeridoo, bass
and slide guitar.
