David Preston
Painter & Linocut Artist (Whale Beach, NSW)

David Preston is a reknown Australian artist, best recognised for his delicately detailed linocuts and beautiful flower paintings in oil. Born in 1948 in Sydney Australia, David graduated from the National Art School in 1971, and in 1978 established Etchers Press in Brett Whitely's Reiby Place Studio in Sydney.

During this time, David created numerous linocuts and etchings for Whitely, John Olsen, Judy Cassab and Charles Blackman to name a few. Through their friendship and encouragement, David developed his skills both as a draughtsman and as a painter, and went on to produce a large catalogue of work that can be found in most public collections in Australia, including the National Gallery of Australia (which currently holds 61 artworks by Preston), and public and private collections in Europe and USA.

David says painting is one way of communicating a human need; to show a heartfelt response or to show what cannot normally be seen. The vocabulary and language of a painting is found in a painting's composition, tone and its gestalt (gestalt theory being the way that the sum of the parts add up to more than the whole.)

David's work has been exhibited in galleries in Australia and internationally, and has been featured on the covers of the New York Gallery Guide, The Geneva Tribune, Figaro Paris and the Sydney Morning Herald.

While living in France during 2000, David Preston was invited by the hospital administrator of Saint Remy de Provence to paint the view from Van Gogh's old hospital room. You can read David's full story The Van Gogh Experience and view the resulting painting and linocut here.

David's latest series of paintings and linocuts feature gorgeous nudes and flowers, inspired largely by his recent marriage in early 2006 to his beautiful muse, Jenni Preston.
