Emma Jane Rooke
Illustrator / Scraper Board (Adelaide SA)
Emma studied design at The Adelaide Central School of Art and Art at The Elizabeth College of Tafe in 1990. In 1992 Emma received an Associate Diploma in Advertising and Graphic Design and worked in the Advertising industry for 7 years as a Graphic Designer before starting a family and pursuing a solo career as an artist.
Emma's first introduction to scraper board was in an illustration class whilst studying graphic design. It eventually became a way of unwinding at night after a busy day at work and still has the same effect. Working from home, Emma enjoys focussing on the tiny bugs, seeds and buds that may not normally get noticed.
Her first exhibition at the Lombard Gallery in 1998 was titled 'Hidden Things'. Bugs and botanicals were the inspiration for Emma's second exhibition 'Utopia' at the State Library of South Australia followed by From Air and Earth' at the Red Dot Gallery in McLaren Vale in 2002. Emma has recently returned from a 3 year stint living in Los Angeles in which time she worked mainly on commission.
Emma's aim through her scraper board drawings is to capture the brilliance of nature using the stark contrast of black and white.
