Greg Weatherby
Indigenous Artist (Sydney NSW)

Greg Weatherby is one of Australia's most distinctive Aboriginal artists. Born in 1942, his Aboriginal heritage is Walbanga from the far south coast of New South Wales. His works incorporate dot painting and cross-hatching techniques, blending traditional and contemporary forms into an award-winning style.

Greg is a master with dot and line and his designs are intricate and finely detailed. Using nature’s vivid colours he celebrates Australia’s great diversity of outback landscapes and vibrant tropical regions. Indigenous animal stories, religious themes and incarnations of Mimi spirits are also features of many works.

Inspired by dreams and visions Greg paints from the heart and the university of real life. In a challenging journey including many years in boys homes after traumatic family break-down, Greg was already working to survive from the age of thirteen. Yet it was always “…in me to draw and paint” and as a child he sketched with a pencil into notebooks.

After years of life on the road, many tough physical jobs and the encouragement of his late wife, Greg eventually tried painting on canvas. In 1982 he exhibited his first four paintings on the Central Coast of New South Wales, and all four were sold.

Greg Weatherby is a versatile and accomplished artist whose works are owned by many private collectors in Australia and overseas. These include three former premiers of New South Wales. His distinguished portfolio includes large murals, fabric designs, collectable boomerangs and fine art.
