Ian Faulkner
Illustrator / Cartographer (Avalon NSW)

I am a multi-talented, multi-skilled illustrator, cartoonist and map maker (cartographer) with over 25 years experience in all styles and genres pertaining to these fields.

For 8 years I was artis- in-residence at the Australian National University Prehistory Research Department, drafting the oldest indigenous artefacts then found in Australia, skulls and human remains from Indonesia over 130,000 years old, site maps and reconstructions, stone tools (lithics) from Australasia, Melanesia etc, the Iceman of Tyrrol artefacts – all seminal work essential to the understanding of human history and evolution.

I was a cartographer (map maker) in full time employment with Australian Georgraphic Magazine, artist at Taronga Zoo Graphics Section. I have also been employed full time as a Primary School Teacher (there really is a Hell on this Earth!). Part time work has included running after garbage trucks (binning), blacksmithing (striker – I never missed!!!), nurse’s aide, private art tuition, eating gelato.

The scope of my work has covered a huge clientele from advertising, publishing, editorial, corporate, scientific / medical and children’s picture books and literature. I have had work displayed on the Footy Show depicting how stem-cell research can grow you a new knee.

I hold a diploma in Graphic Design (Watson C.A.E and Randwick TAFE), a diploma in Infants and Primary Education (Kuring-Gai CAE) and a certificate in Taxonomy (Sydney TAFE) – licensed to STUFF!!!

I am separated with teenage children, and a Burke Parrot named Cruella de ville. I used to write and perform plays, skits and street theatre, but retired from the stage due to inadequacies in the sex scenes …. My personal hygiene is second to none.

If I didn’t enjoy my work so much I would donate my body to science (vivisection). My blood type is just plain and common.

Please contact me for all your illustration, cartooning and mapping eeds – including illustrator maps. I am equally adept with both traditional and digital techniques. For rates and availability please email below or call 0419 232 142 during business hours.
