Kaye Freeman
Painter + Illustrator (Myrtleford, VIC)

Kaye Freeman's broad range of imagery was initially forged in the theatre as a young dancer. Her fascination with the Russian Ballet stirred her lifelong love of colour and composition and the mystery it creates.

Kaye grew up Tokyo and attended and participated in dance performances in Asia and Australia throughout her childhood and into her 20s.

Kaye's decision to abandon dancing and immerse herself in the creation of the visual was the start of a journey to some exciting and mysterious places, but the influence of the theatre never left her.

Her past and current work features this play with performance and spectacle, including painting and drawing and photography. After winning the much coveted inaugural John Olson Scholarship at the renowned Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney Australia, Kaye went on to complete her Diploma in Painting and was almost immediately adopted by the film industry after graduation.

Kaye worked on such spectacular films like Peter Pan, Anna and the King and Moulin Rouge. Her versatility was ideally suited to filmic invention as designers and set decorators encouraged and challenged her to create more and more stunning effects for their films. She was also one of a crew who painted Tokyo Disneyland's Water world. In 2005 Kaye walked away from all the glamour of the film world to pursue the dream of creating her own art world. Since that time she has been in many selected shows as well as two successful solo exhibitions. She lives and works in Country Victoria and travels to Japan once a year for good food and inspiration.

Artist statement
My new series of work is titled Limbo in Shellac. It is about love, loss and mental and emotional illness. Apart from portraits I often use stills from films as a starting point for my compositions as there is a universal truth in many of the images, which are readily recognisable to the viewer. I work with graphite, shellac, tinters, tar, iron paste, oil pastels and oil paint. Using such a variety of media allows me the freedom to adapt whatever is needed to paint the picture. There is an unpredictability and volatility in using such materials, which requires risk taking and commitment.
