Mark Rhodes
Painter (Avalon, NSW)

Mark grew up and lives on the northern beaches in Sydney and draws his artistic inspiration from his love and intimate knowledge of the local environment; the landscape, seascape, people and atmosphere. His works explore the forces that create change within our environment, with the final image giving the impression of a powerful moment in time.

His paintings are about allowing the landscape to evolve on the canvas rather than trying to capture it. Using a combination of float and traditional oil painting techniques, and a variety of media and magical glazes, he seeks to convey a fluidity that allows you to gaze into the piece, with the image constantly offering something new.

Mark’s work is sought after by collectors of emerging contemporary art and those that appreciate sophisticated technique and refined skill, both of which he has honed in the fifteen years he has been practicing as a professional artist.

His work continues to mature in scope, style and content as he maintains his commitment to his artistic development and the expression of his unique perspective. Recent works have shown a move towards the inclusion of figurative elements that have leant a strong narrative tone to his distinctive style.

2007 has seen Mark gain recognition in two prestigious prizes; The Gallipoli Memorial Prize -  www.gallipoli.com.au, for which he was highly commended and the Blake Prize for Religious Art - www.blakeprize.com.au, which he has been honoured to be included in the touring exhibition throughout 2008.

He is currently working towards a major solo exhibition for the collective Summer Show at Avalon Recreation Centre, along side other well-known northern beaches artists including Linda Dry-Parker, Stephen Glassborow, John Ogden and Louise Whelen from January 3rd 2008.

Mark can be found most weekends in his wonderful studio on Barrenjoey Road, in Palm Beach and welcomes visitors who wish to view his work, discuss commissions or simply take in the environment of an artist at work.
