Paula
do Prado was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1979. In 1986, at the age of 7,
she moved with her family to Sydney, Australia. She has completed a Bachelor
of Arts degree at the University of Sydney, focusing on psychology, fine arts
and philosophy and in 2001 she was awarded a Master in Criminology degree.
Paula has also worked within two of the Big Four accounting firms
as a consultant. Despite a diverse range of academic and professional interests,
she has always
maintained a strong passion and dedication to her art practice.
Paula is influenced by a wide range of figures, including artists and writers
such as Francisco Goya, Mark Rothko, Frida Kahlo, Horacio Quiroga, Freidrich
Nietzsche, Gabriel Garcia Marques and art movements like Surrealism, Dada and
Pop Art.
Her own work involves painting, collage and soft sculpture utilising
a variety of materials such as paper, wood, feathers, felt and nylon hair.
After deciding to take a break from 'working in a nice office
in the city' she is currently in the process of completing a Bachelor of Fine
Arts degree
majoring in Textiles. She also continues to develop and sell her art through
her small art business, Prado-Marin.
Paula's work has been exhibited at Kudos Gallery
in Paddington and in group exhibitions with fellow Textiles
major students
in 2005. Paula's artworks have also been on display and sold at the COFA
Spring Art Fair. Many of Paula's artworks are in private collections.
Artists Statement:
"I
make art because I have to, because I feel the need to create. This is what
I do. Often working from small samples which lead to
further experimentation with materials and groupings, the end result becomes
a play between shape, colour and texture. What is important to me is that
the work should have an emotional component, that its qualities should engage
the
viewer to want to touch and more closely inspect the work."
