The
Society of Arts and Crafts of NSW artsandcraftnsw.com.au The
Society of Arts and Crafts of NSW has a long and complex history. Founded in 1906
when a group of six craftspeople gathered for afternoon tea and a discussion on
the future of arts and crafts in Australia, the initial subscription was one shilling
with a fine of sixpence to be imposed when members failed to exhibit work. In
1906 Australia's supply of equipment and materials was very dependent on English
imports. But these six had a home grown objective. This was
to foster uniquely Australian handcrafts in both material and design. And
for over ninety years groups of like-minded crafts men and women have persisted.
Many of our members are involved in Australia's long standing tradition of craft
guilds. Some members are represented in public collections: the National Gallery,
the Art Gallery of NSW and the Powerhouse Museum. Today, the Society's historical
documents are stored in the Mitchell Library. In Australian
Image Craft at The Rocks, we proudly display a selection of precious examples
of our heritage. We also continue to seek out the work of past
members but we no longer have to fine our members sixpence for failure to exhibit
their craftwork. In fact, they always surprise us with the enthusiasm they show
in adapting materials and new technologies to the old traditions of Australian
handcraft. If you'd like to read a little more of our history, just click on the
